Simulation for Cross-Functional Collaboration

Simulation for Cross-Functional Collaboration

Cross-functional collaboration remains one of the most persistent organizational challenges. Despite major shifts in management thinking and the way organizations operate, managers and teams still tend to act within their own area of responsibility, focus on what seems right locally, and struggle to see how their decisions affect others. The result is bottlenecks, friction, and processes that fail to move forward as planned, even when everyone is acting with the best intentions.

Friday Night at the ER is an experiential management simulation that places participants inside a dynamic and interdependent system. Working in small teams, participants make decisions in real time while managing competing priorities and local constraints. Very quickly, they discover that decisions that appear effective from their own perspective often create unintended consequences elsewhere.

Through the simulation, participants experience first-hand how local optimization can limit overall performance. Rather than learning through models or discussion, insights emerge directly from action, making complexity tangible and exposing the hidden dependencies across the organization.

This shift in perspective creates a different kind of conversation. Managers begin to see beyond the boundaries of their own role, better understand organizational interfaces, and recognize the impact of their actions on others. For organizations, this leads to stronger collaboration, more focused dialogue across teams, and a greater ability to navigate complexity and operate in a coordinated and effective way.
